How to Prepare for a Snow Goose Conservation Hunt in Arkansas

The Arkansas snow goose conservation season is one of the most action-packed hunting experiences available in North America. With no bag limits, electronic calls allowed, and large flocks of birds filling the sky, conservation hunts provide an unmatched opportunity for high-volume shooting and unforgettable mornings in the field.

But to make the most of your hunt, preparation is key.

At Bayou Bottoms Guide Service, we’ve guided hundreds of hunters through successful conservation season hunts across Northeast Arkansas. We’ll show you exactly how to prepare for a snow goose hunt—from gear and licensing to field tactics and tips for success.

What Is the Snow Goose Conservation Season?

Wildlife Service to reduce the overpopulation of snow, blue, and Ross’s geese. Their booming populations have damaged critical Arctic breeding habitats, and this conservation effort allows hunters to harvest more geese without the usual restrictions.

Key Features:

  • No daily bag or possession limits

  • Electronic calls and e-callers allowed

  • Unplugged shotguns permitted (no magazine restrictions)

  • Extended shooting hours (30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset)

The season in Arkansas typically runs from early February through mid-March, depending on migration timing and weather.

Essential Licenses and Permits

To participate in the conservation season, hunters do not need a federal duck stamp, but they must have:

  • A valid Arkansas hunting license

  • A free Light Goose Conservation Order permit, available through the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission

You can obtain your permit here:

What Gear Do You Need for a Snow Goose Conservation Hunt?

Snow goose hunts demand specialized gear and preparation. Here's a complete list of must-haves for the field:

Shotgun and Ammo

  • 12-gauge shotgun, preferably semi-automatic

  • Unplugged (during conservation season, you're allowed extended mags)

  • High-velocity steel shot, size BB or BBB recommended

  • Bring 8–10 boxes of shells per day—you’ll need them

Tip: Bring extra chokes and cleaning supplies. Dust and high-volume shooting can cause performance issues if not cleaned daily.

Clothing

  • White camouflage (most snow goose hunts are done in white spreads)

  • Waterproof boots and insulated base layers

  • Gloves, face coverings, and hand warmers

  • Rain gear and windproof outerwear

Tip: February in Arkansas can be freezing or 60 degrees—layer for flexibility.

Personal Essentials

  • Hearing protection (highly recommended for all-day shooting)

  • Eye protection

  • Energy bars and water

  • Backpack or gear bag with shell holders

  • Camera or GoPro for capturing the action

Your guide will handle decoys, blinds, and e-callers—just bring yourself and the essentials.

What to Expect in the Field

A typical conservation hunt with Bayou Bottoms runs from early morning until mid-afternoon. Here’s what a day looks like:

4:30–5:00 AM – Meet & Field Setup

Our team sets decoys before daylight. You'll help finish layout preparation or get settled in.

6:15 AM – Legal Shooting Light

We begin hunting as soon as light allows. Birds tend to fly in
waves, so expect periods of calm followed by intense action.

8:00–11:00 AM – Prime Time

Large flocks often start feeding during this window. Geese may circle several times before committing.

Midday – Optional Continued Hunting

Because there are no limits, we often hunt longer if birds are still moving.

Note: It’s common to shoot hundreds of rounds during a good hunt. Bring all the ammo you can carry.

Tips to Maximize Your Success

1. Be Mentally and Physically Prepared

Snow goose hunting is a
high-effort sport. You’ll wake up early, sit still in cold temps, and shoot fast. Stay alert and ready to reload quickly.

2. Trust Your Guide

We’ve done this hundreds of times. Our guides will call the shots, manage decoys, and adjust setups for success.

3. Stay Still and Quiet

Snow geese are smart. Movement and chatter can flare entire flocks. Keep low, stay quiet, and wait for your guide’s signal to shoot.

4. Bring Extra Gear

Bring more shells, batteries, socks, and snacks than you think you need. When the birds fly, you won’t want to leave the field.

5. Practice Leading Birds

These birds are
fast and wary. Practice on clay targets to get your timing and lead distances dialed in before your hunt.

How Is Conservation Season Different from Regular Goose Hunting?

Feature Regular Goose Season Conservation Season
Bag Limits Yes (usually 20/day) No limits
Electronic Calls Not allowed Allowed
Shotgun Plugs Required Not required
Shooting Hours Sunrise to sunset Extended: 30 mins before & after
Target Species Snow, Canada geese Light geese only (Snow, Blue, Ross's)

These relaxed regulations are what make conservation season so exciting—it’s the only time of year hunters are encouraged to take as many geese as possible.
